Overview
The environment of the Upper Red Lake region is blessed with
huge forests and wilderness areas, rich agricultural land, hundreds of tributaries
and hundreds of smaller lakes, and extensive mineral deposits. The
region's glacial history and the tremendous influence of the lake themselves
create unique conditions that support a wealth of biological diversity,
including rare species and ecosystems.
The environment supports world-class fishing and a variety
of wildlife, such as white-tailed deer, beaver, muskrat, weasel, fox, black
bear, bobcat, moose and other fur bearing animals. Bird populations thrive on
the various terrains, some migrating south in the winter, others making
permanent homes. A great number of species of fish are found in the Upper Red
Lake Lakes, including crappies, northern pike, perch, whitefish and recovering
walleyes.
The region's sandy shores, marshes,
forests, wetlands and other landscapes contain features that are either unique
or best represented with- in the Upper Red Lake Area. For example, the south edge of the Big
Bog, the last remains of Lake Agassiz, a huge inland sea formed
by the melting of the Pleistocene Glacier. What remains is grand and inspiring!!
